The Return of a Prodigal Son

It's official: Ryan Sessegnon is back at Fulham! After being released by Tottenham, the 24-year-old has made a triumphant return to the club where it all began. This free transfer is more than just a homecoming; it's a story of unfinished business and the promise of new beginnings.

A Homegrown Talent Returns

Ryan Sessegnon needs no introduction to Fulham fans. Sess signed for the club at the tender age of 9 and burst onto the scene as a teenager, quickly becoming one of the hottest prospects in English football. Sessegnon's journey from the Fulham academy to the first team was meteoric. His blistering pace, keen eye for goal, and undeniable flair made him a fan favourite at Craven Cottage.

Speaking to FFCtv after his signing was confirmed, Sess said: "It’s amazing to be back. Emotional, as well. It’s where it started for me, where everything began, and it’s amazing to be back."

After making his debut for Fulham at just 16, Sess didn't take long to leave a lasting impression. His performances in the 2017-18 Championship season were nothing short of spectacular, scoring 16 goals, winning countless awards and helping Fulham secure promotion to the Premier League with that killer pass through to Tom Cairney. His potential seemed limitless and it was no surprise that a big move was on the cards.

A Tough Spell at Tottenham

In 2019, Sessegnon made the move to Tottenham, a step up that many saw as the next logical progression in his career. The 25m fee was a record sale for Fulham at the time, eclipsed only in the last few seasons by Mitrovic and Palhinha, and the majority of Fulham fans didn't begrudge the talented youngster his big move. However, things didn't quite pan out as expected. Plagued by injuries and struggling for consistent game time, Sessegnon never truly found his footing at Spurs. Loan spells at Hoffenheim provided glimpses of his talent, but he never managed to cement his place in the Tottenham lineup.

Reflecting on his time at Spurs, Sess admitted, "It was definitely a difficult period for me, but I’ve learnt a lot about myself, the game and the industry as a whole. I’m grateful for those experiences and feel they’ve made me stronger both on and off the pitch."

Why This Move Makes Sense

Fulham and Sess are a match made in heaven. This move is not just about nostalgia; it's about practicality and potential. Fulham get a player who knows the club inside out, while Sess gets a fresh start in familiar surroundings. With Fulham's current squad looking at little thin, Sessegnon's return could be the perfect fit.

Sessegnon's versatility is a massive plus. He can slot in as a left-back, left-winger, or even further up the pitch which covers a lot of bases for the squad. We've been looking for a "cheap" backup for Robinson and Sess certainly fits the bill although it's obviously not his preferred position. His pace, ability to take on defenders and always seeming to be in the right place at the right time to find the back of the net will be an asset to the squad either starting or coming off the bench.

Sess echoed this sentiment, saying, "I’m really excited to get going and back playing. The main thing for me is to play football, so I want to enjoy that and help the team as much as possible.”

Although Sess has had a hard time with injury and regular game time, this feels like a project worth taking on and could be yet another career resurrected by Marco Silva. With this being a free transfer this looks like another shrewd bit of business from Fulham.

Let's face it, Fulham fans have always had a soft spot for Sess and, with the lack of transfer activity, for this to be the first confirmed transfer of the window feels a bit magical in away. His return is bound to boost morale to a frustrated fanbase and add a sense of excitement around what is to come with the transfers of Andre and Emile Smith-Rowe reportedly getting much closer. There's something special about seeing a homegrown talent come back, ready to prove himself once more.

As Sessegnon himself put it, "My message to the fans is just thank you. You’ve supported me through everything, and I want to repay that with my performances on the pitch. I'm really happy to be back. This club has always been special to me, and I can't wait to get started again. The fans have always been fantastic, and I’m looking forward to playing in front of them once more."

Final Thoughts

Ryan Sessegnon's return to Fulham is more than just a transfer; it's a reunion with a player who was always our favourite son. After a challenging spell at Tottenham, Sesse has the chance to reignite his career where it all began. Here's to hoping that Sessegnon can rediscover his best form and help Fulham achieve great things in the seasons to come. They always say never get back with your ex, but this might just be that one in a million time it works out and the thought of that is pure magic.
