Fulham secured a deserved 2-1 victory over Leicester City in their first home game of the season, delivering a confident and energetic performance at Craven Cottage.
From the first whistle, Fulham surged forward with a relentless energy that had Leicester on the back foot. The high-pressing game suffocated the Foxes, forcing them into errors and leaving them scrambling to regain possession. Fulham's wide players, especially Adama Traoré, were electric, exploiting space on the flanks to keep Leicester’s defence in disarray.
It took only 18 minutes for the home crowd to erupt. Emile Smith Rowe, Fulham’s record signing, marked his home debut with a moment of class. After receiving a perfectly timed pass from Traoré, Smith Rowe ghosted past his marker before curling a composed finish into the far corner, sending the Fulham faithful into a frenzy. The new signing's confidence and precision on the ball were clear signs of his potential impact for the season ahead.
Leicester, meanwhile, struggled to gain a foothold. Their brightest moment in the first half came through former Fulham man Bobby Reid, whose speculative effort from distance forced Bernd Leno into a sharp save. But aside from that, the Foxes found themselves pinned back by an organised Fulham midfield, led by the tenacious Saša Lukić, who made it his mission to disrupt Leicester’s rhythm and launch swift counter-attacks.
Yet, despite their dominance, Fulham were pegged back in frustrating circumstances. In the 38th minute, a set-piece led to a scrambled header from Wout Faes that found the back of the net. Initially disallowed by referee Darren Bond for interference on Leno, the decision was controversially overturned by VAR. The equaliser felt like a sucker punch to Fulham, whose marking had momentarily faltered.
Marco Silva didn’t mince words after the game. "We gave them a goal from a set-piece that we should have done much better with,” Silva remarked. “This is something we need to improve, especially at home. Our set-pieces, both defensively and offensively, we have to be more consistent."
Despite the setback, Fulham emerged for the second half with the same hunger and urgency. Traoré continued to terrorise Leicester’s backline, while the combination play between Fulham’s midfield and forwards caused the visitors all sorts of problems. Rodrigo Muniz, eager to get off the mark, came agonisingly close twice, with a header and a volley both flashing just over the bar. The Brazilian striker seemed on the verge of breaking his drought, and the Craven Cottage faithful were willing him on with every attack.
Fulham’s pressure finally paid off in the 70th minute. Antonee Robinson, who had been a constant outlet on the left, delivered a superb through ball that split the Leicester defence. Alex Iwobi latched onto it and showed his class by slotting the ball through Mads Hermansen's legs, restoring Fulham's lead. The roar of the crowd reverberated around the stadium as Fulham deservedly took control once again.
As the clock ticked down, Leicester threw everything forward in search of a late equaliser. Wilfred Ndidi had a golden opportunity in injury time, but his powerful shot was straight at Leno, who stood firm to preserve the lead.
After the match, Silva praised his side’s determination and focus. "We showed great character today," Silva said. "Even after their goal, which came in a way we didn’t expect, we kept believing in our football. The boys were brave, and the way we responded in the second half was exactly what I want to see from them."
With this win, Fulham not only grabbed three crucial points but also sent a message to the rest of the league. They will be a force to reckon with at Craven Cottage this season. Silva’s side now shift focus to Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Birmingham City, with momentum firmly in their favour and a squad that’s beginning to gel beautifully.
Fulham’s attack looks potent, the defence solid, and with the passion and creativity flowing through the team, the sky seems the limit for this West London outfit. Exciting times are ahead at Craven Cottage.
